curasan receives pan-European approval for Cerasorb® block forms

curasan AG (WKN 549 453) has received EC certification for Cerasorb® block forms. With immediate effect, this product has been approved throughout Europe for unlimited use as a bone augmentation material in bone defects. Thus, curasan has extended its product portfolio in the area of bone regeneration by adding a broad range of block forms based on the proven Cerasorb® beta-Tricalciumphosphate synthetic ceramic.

Cerasorb® block forms can be used in many different areas of medicine. This includes larger defects in weight-bearing regions, as seen within the field of traumatology, orthopaedics and sports medicine.

The ready-made blocks are available in various forms and sizes, offering stable, perfect-fit application and simple handling. The main innovation and characteristic of these block forms is that they have a special, uniformly aligned system of pores. This provides excellent conditions for interconnection with surrounding bone tissue. The bone structures that are created are interlinked with the block form; geared to full functionality, they allow the rapid return of the natural weight-bearing capacity within the implantation region. The result is consistent blood supply to the area of implantation, thus facilitating rapid resorption of the bone regeneration material. Therefore, at the end of this process the original state of the bone is restored.

The efficacy of Cerasorb® is comparable to that of autologous bone grafts. In the majority of cases the risk and cost associated with harvesting autologous bone can be avoided. Therefore, this procedure is considered to be more cost-effective and less invasive for the patient.

The overall market value of bone replacement materials used in the area of orthopaedics is currently worth approx. EUR 250 million in Europe alone. Future annual growth is estimated at roughly 12% per annum. If the predominant medical procedure of using autologous bone grafting, which is more invasive and expensive, can be successfully replaced by the more innovative solution, the growth potential is likely to be even higher.
