curasan AG: strong growth in first quarter
Kleinostheim, May 13, 2004 - curasan AG (WKN 549 453) today announced its financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2004. Year-on-year comparisons must take into account that the Pharmaceuticals business unit (Anti-Infectives and AIEP products) was sold by the company in November 2003. In the first three months of 2004, i.e. the first full quarter since the disposal of the Pharmaceuticals unit, revenues generated by continuing operations rose by 43%, from EUR 1.7 million to EUR 2.4 million. In the same period a year ago, total revenue, including that generated within the Pharmaceuticals unit, had amounted to EUR 4.5 million. The EBIT was reduced from EUR -1,065 thousand to EUR -516 thousand in the first quarter (2003: total earning before interest and taxes of EUR -325 thousand). As a result of corporate streamlining, the total headcount stood at 77 at the end of the quarter, compared with 103.
Benefiting from the launch of new, innovative products such as Curavisc® and Cerasorb® Dental, as well as the penetration of new markets, the company has established a solid foundation for continued growth. Additional product rollouts and distribution agreements are expected to contribute substantially to the company's revenue target of EUR 10 million, with more or less break-even results.
The Management Board believes that the company's positive performance, coupled with a tangible upward trend in the first quarter, attests to the incisiveness of its decision to focus on regenerative medicine and underpins its forecast of significant sales growth for 2004 (in the remaining business unit).
